Born in Moscow, Russia in 1968, Mursky showed an early aptitude for music and began studying piano at the age of six. He quickly demonstrated a prodigious talent, winning his first competition at the age of eight and going on to win numerous awards throughout his youth. Mursky's musical education was rigorous and comprehensive. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory with some of the most esteemed teachers in the country, including Lev Naumov and Sergei Dorensky. He also had the opportunity to work with legendary pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, who recognized Mursky's exceptional talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. In 1990, Mursky made his debut as a soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. The performance was a resounding success, and Mursky quickly established himself as one of the most promising young pianists in Russia. He went on to perform with many of the country's leading orchestras, including the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Russian National Orchestra, and the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra. In 1993, Mursky moved to the United States to continue his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City. He studied with renowned pianist and pedagogue Jerome Lowenthal, who helped him refine his technique and deepen his understanding of the music he was playing. Mursky also had the opportunity to work with other distinguished musicians, including conductor James Conlon and pianist Emanuel Ax. Mursky's career continued to flourish in the United States. He won several major competitions, including the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and the Cleveland International Piano Competition. He also performed with many of the country's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Mursky's repertoire is vast and varied, encompassing works from the Baroque era to the present day. He is particularly renowned for his interpretations of the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, whose works he has recorded extensively. Mursky's recordings of Rachmaninoff's complete piano works have been widely praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. In addition to his work as a soloist, Mursky is also a dedicated chamber musician. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading instrumentalists and vocalists, including violinist Joshua Bell, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and soprano Renée Fleming. He is a founding member of the Moscow Piano Quartet, which has performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States.
