Born on April 27, 1959, in Montreal, Quebec, Lortie began playing the piano at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from an early age. He studied at the École de musique Vincent-d'Indy in Montreal and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. Lortie's career took off in the 1980s when he won several prestigious international piano competitions, including the Busoni Competition in Italy and the Leeds International Piano Competition in England. These victories brought him to the attention of the classical music world and led to numerous concert engagements around the world. Lortie has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many renowned conductors, such as Sir Simon Rattle, Bernard Haitink, and Charles Dutoit. One of Lortie's most notable performances was his interpretation of Franz Liszt's complete piano works, which he performed in a series of recitals in major cities around the world. This ambitious project took several years to complete and cemented Lortie's reputation as a leading interpreter of Liszt's music. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Lortie is also an accomplished chamber musician and has collaborated with many distinguished artists, including violinist Augustin Dumay and cellist Jian Wang.
