He was the son of a French father and a Swiss mother, and his family moved to Paris when he was just four years old. Cortot showed an early aptitude for music, and he began studying piano at the Paris Conservatoire when he was just nine years old. Cortot's talent was quickly recognized, and he won several prizes and awards during his time at the Conservatoire. He studied under some of the most prominent pianists of the time, including Louis Diémer and Émile Decombes. In 1896, at the age of 19, Cortot won the prestigious Prix de Rome, which allowed him to study in Italy for three years. After returning to Paris, Cortot began his career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and expressive pianists of his time, and he became known for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, Schumann, and Liszt. He also performed the works of contemporary composers, including Debussy and Ravel. Cortot's career as a conductor began in 1919, when he was invited to conduct the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra. He went on to conduct many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He was known for his ability to bring out the best in the musicians he worked with, and he was highly respected by his colleagues. In addition to his performing and conducting career, Cortot was also a highly respected teacher. He taught at the Paris Conservatoire for many years, and he also founded his own music school, the École Normale de Musique de Paris. Many of his students went on to become successful musicians in their own right, including Yvonne Lefébure and Dinu Lipatti. One of Cortot's most famous performances was his recording of Chopin's 24 Preludes, which he made in 1926. The recording is still considered one of the greatest interpretations of the work, and it helped to cement Cortot's reputation as one of the greatest pianists of his time. He also recorded many other works, including the complete piano works of Schumann and the piano concertos of Beethoven and Brahms. Cortot's career was not without controversy, however. He was criticized for his support of the Vichy regime during World War II, and he was briefly banned from performing in France after the war. He was eventually allowed to resume his career, but his reputation was tarnished by his association with the Vichy government. Despite these controversies, Cortot's legacy as a musician and teacher is still highly respected. He died on June 15, 1962, in Lausanne, Switzerland, at the age of 84. His recordings and performances continue to be studied and admired by musicians and music lovers around the world, and his influence on the world of classical music is still felt today.More....
