'Olav Trygvason' is an opera composed by Edvard Grieg, with a libretto by Bjornstjerne Bjornson. The opera was composed between 1873 and 1875, and premiered on June 24, 1875, at the Christiania Theatre in Oslo, Norway. The opera tells the story of Olav Trygvason, a Viking king who ruled Norway from 995 to 1000 AD. The plot revolves around Olav's efforts to convert the Norwegian people to Christianity, and his eventual defeat at the Battle of Svolder. The opera is divided into three movements. The first movement, titled "The Prologue," sets the stage for the story and introduces the main characters. The second movement, titled "The Conversion," focuses on Olav's efforts to convert the Norwegian people to Christianity. The third movement, titled "The Battle," depicts the Battle of Svolder and Olav's eventual defeat. One of the characteristics of 'Olav Trygvason' is its use of Norwegian folk music. Grieg incorporated traditional Norwegian melodies into the opera, giving it a distinctly Norwegian flavor. Another characteristic is the use of leitmotifs, or recurring musical themes, to represent different characters and ideas. Despite its initial success, 'Olav Trygvason' was not performed frequently after its premiere. However, it has since been revived and is now considered an important work in Norwegian opera.
