I Fiamminghi, also known as The Orchestra of Flanders, is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1988 by Rudolf Werthen, a Belgian conductor and violinist. The ensemble is known for its unique sound, which combines the rich tradition of Flemish music with the best of European classical music. The founding of I Fiamminghi was a response to the growing interest in classical music in Belgium and the need for a professional orchestra that could perform at the highest level. Rudolf Werthen, who had already established himself as a respected conductor and violinist, saw an opportunity to create an ensemble that would showcase the best of Flemish music and bring it to a wider audience. The ensemble's name, I Fiamminghi, is Italian for "The Flemish," and reflects the group's commitment to promoting the rich musical heritage of Flanders. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by Flemish composers such as Josquin des Prez, Orlando di Lasso, and Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, as well as works by European composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Over the years, I Fiamminghi has attracted some of the best musicians from Belgium and beyond. The ensemble's main members include violinists Janine Jansen and Vadim Repin, cellist Mischa Maisky, and pianist Maria João Pires. These musicians have helped to establish I Fiamminghi as one of the most respected classical music ensembles in Europe. One of the highlights of I Fiamminghi's career was their performance at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. The ensemble was invited to perform at the opening ceremony, where they played a piece by Flemish composer Peter Benoit. The performance was widely praised for its beauty and elegance, and helped to raise the profile of I Fiamminghi on the international stage. Another notable performance by I Fiamminghi was their collaboration with the Belgian dance company Rosas. The ensemble provided the music for the company's production of "Achterland," which premiered in 1990. The production was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish I Fiamminghi as a versatile and innovative ensemble. In addition to their performances, I Fiamminghi has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1993, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Prix Caecilia, which is given annually to the best classical music ensemble in Belgium. The following year, I Fiamminghi was awarded the Flemish Culture Prize for Music, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the cultural life of Flanders. Despite these successes, I Fiamminghi has faced some challenges over the years. In 2002, the ensemble was forced to cancel several performances due to financial difficulties. However, the group was able to overcome these challenges and continue to perform at the highest level. Today, I Fiamminghi remains one of the most respected classical music ensembles in Europe. The group continues to perform a wide range of repertoire, from early music to contemporary works, and has collaborated with some of the most talented musicians and artists in the world. With its commitment to promoting the rich musical heritage of Flanders and its dedication to excellence, I Fiamminghi is sure to remain a fixture in the classical music world for years to come.
