Rudolf Werthen is a renowned Belgian conductor and violinist who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born on April 10, 1949, in Antwerp, Belgium, Werthen showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. Werthen began his career as a violinist, performing with various orchestras in Europe and the United States. In 1977, he founded the I Fiamminghi chamber orchestra, which quickly gained recognition for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. The orchestra's repertoire included works by both classical and contemporary composers, and it toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. In 1987, Werthen turned his attention to conducting and became the music director of the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie in Belgium. He also served as the principal conductor of the Ulster Orchestra in Northern Ireland from 1994 to 2001. During his tenure with these orchestras, Werthen gained a reputation for his dynamic and expressive conducting style, as well as his ability to bring out the best in his musicians.
