John Bruce Yeh is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on September 16, 1953, in Washington D.C. to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Yeh grew up in a musical environment and started playing the clarinet at the age of nine. Yeh's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly became a prodigy. He studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. He also attended the Yale School of Music, where he earned a Master of Music degree. Yeh's career as a professional musician began in 1977 when he joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as the assistant principal clarinetist. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the principal clarinetist in 1979. He held this position for over 30 years, making him one of the longest-serving principal clarinetists in the history of the orchestra. During his time with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Yeh performed in numerous concerts and recordings. He also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Sir Georg Solti, Daniel Barenboim, and Pierre Boulez. Yeh's performances were always highly praised, and he became known for his technical skill and musicality. In 2002, he was awarded the Cultural Medallion by the government of Singapore, which is the highest cultural award in the country. He was also awarded the Order of Merit by the government of Taiwan in 2010. Yeh retired from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2019, after serving as the principal clarinetist for over 30 years. However, he continues to perform as a soloist and chamber musician and is in high demand around the world. In addition to his work as a musician, Yeh is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the DePaul University School of Music in Chicago since 1982 and has also taught at the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music.
