She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Her mother was a pianist, and her father was a conductor and composer. Løvberg began singing at a young age and showed great promise as a musician. Løvberg studied at the Oslo Conservatory of Music, where she trained under the renowned Norwegian soprano Kirsten Flagstad. She made her debut in 1945 at the Norwegian National Opera in the role of Mimi in Puccini's La Bohème. Her performance was well-received, and she quickly became a rising star in the world of classical music. Over the course of her career, Løvberg performed in many of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Vienna State Opera. She was known for her powerful voice and her ability to convey emotion through her singing. One of Løvberg's most notable performances was in the role of Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni. She performed the role at the Salzburg Festival in 1954, and her performance was widely praised. She also performed the role at the Metropolitan Opera in 1957, where she received critical acclaim. Løvberg was also known for her performances of Norwegian folk songs. She recorded several albums of traditional Norwegian music, which helped to popularize the genre both in Norway and internationally. Her recordings of these songs are still highly regarded today.
