She was born on July 23, 1944, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to parents who were both musicians. Her father, Pinchas Zukerman, was a violinist, and her mother, Eugenia, was a flutist. Eugenia Zukerman grew up in New York City and began playing the flute at the age of eight. Zukerman studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree. She then went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music, where she earned a Master of Music degree. During her studies, Zukerman was a student of Julius Baker, one of the most renowned flutists of the 20th century. After completing her studies, Zukerman began her career as a professional flutist. She quickly gained recognition for her virtuosic playing and expressive interpretations of classical music. She performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her work as a performer, Zukerman is also an accomplished writer and broadcaster. She has written several books, including "Like Falling Through a Cloud: A Lyrical Memoir," which chronicles her experience with Alzheimer's disease. She has also written for numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times. Zukerman is also a well-known broadcaster. She has hosted several television programs, including "Sunday Arts" on WNET in New York City and "The Arts in Context" on KLRU in Austin, Texas.
