Born on August 27, 1943, in New York City, Vogel grew up in a family that valued music. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Vogel started playing the recorder at the age of ten and later switched to the oboe. Vogel attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied with Robert Bloom. He later continued his studies with Marcel Tabuteau at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Vogel's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly established himself as a rising star in the classical music world. In 1972, Vogel joined the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra as principal oboist, a position he held for over 40 years. During his tenure with the orchestra, Vogel performed in countless concerts and recordings, earning critical acclaim for his virtuosic playing and musical sensitivity. He also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors and soloists, including Sir Neville Marriner, Itzhak Perlman, and Yo-Yo Ma. He has also been a frequent guest artist at music festivals around the world, including the Marlboro Music Festival, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and the La Jolla Music Society SummerFest. In 1982, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music.
