Born on December 23, 1900, in Frankfurt, Germany, Schmitt-Walter was the son of a music teacher. He showed an early interest in music and began his vocal training at the age of 16. Schmitt-Walter's talent was quickly recognized, and he made his debut as a concert singer in 1923. He then joined the Frankfurt Opera in 1924, where he performed in various productions, including Wagner's "The Ring Cycle." In 1927, he moved to the Berlin State Opera, where he became a member of the ensemble and performed in numerous productions. Schmitt-Walter's breakthrough came in 1930 when he performed the role of Wolfram in Wagner's "Tannhäuser" at the Bayreuth Festival. His performance was highly acclaimed, and he was invited to perform at the festival for the next five years. He also performed at other major opera houses in Europe, including the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan. During World War II, Schmitt-Walter continued to perform, but his career was interrupted by his service in the German army. After the war, he resumed his career and performed in various productions, including Mozart's "Don Giovanni" and Beethoven's "Fidelio." Schmitt-Walter was known for his powerful voice and his ability to convey emotion through his performances. He was particularly renowned for his performances of Wagner's music, and he was considered one of the greatest interpreters of the composer's work. In addition to his opera performances, Schmitt-Walter was also a prolific concert singer.
