He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known conductor and composer. Berman began playing the piano at a young age and showed great talent and promise. Berman studied at the Prague Conservatory, where he was a student of the renowned pianist and composer, Josef Suk. He also studied with other notable musicians, including Rudolf Firkušný and Václav Talich. Berman's talent and dedication to his craft were evident from an early age, and he quickly became known as one of the most promising young pianists in Czechoslovakia. In 1938, Berman made his debut as a soloist with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The performance was a great success, and Berman was praised for his technical skill and musicality. This performance marked the beginning of Berman's career as a concert pianist, and he went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. During World War II, Berman was imprisoned in the Terezín concentration camp, where he continued to play the piano and compose music. He was one of the few musicians who survived the camp, and his experiences there had a profound impact on his life and work. After the war, Berman resumed his career as a concert pianist and composer. He performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and he was known for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin.
