The Danish National Vocal Ensemble is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over three decades. The ensemble was founded in 1984 by conductor Stefan Parkman, who served as its artistic director until 1994. Since then, the ensemble has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Marcus Creed, Stephen Layton, and Marcus Farnsworth. The Danish National Vocal Ensemble is made up of 18 professional singers, all of whom are highly skilled and experienced in the art of choral singing. The ensemble's repertoire spans a wide range of musical styles and periods, from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works. The ensemble is particularly known for its interpretations of Nordic choral music, and has commissioned and premiered numerous works by Danish composers. Over the years, the Danish National Vocal Ensemble has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Edinburgh International Festival. The ensemble has also collaborated with many leading orchestras and conductors, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and Sir Simon Rattle. One of the highlights of the Danish National Vocal Ensemble's career was its performance at the 2010 World Choral Symposium in Copenhagen. The ensemble's concert, which featured works by Nordic composers such as Per Nørgård and Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, was widely praised for its technical precision and emotional depth. The ensemble's performance of Nørgård's "Wie ein Kind" was particularly memorable, with its haunting harmonies and ethereal textures. In addition to its live performances, the Danish National Vocal Ensemble has also released numerous recordings, many of which have received critical acclaim. The ensemble's recording of Per Nørgård's "Symphony No. 3" with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Thomas Dausgaard was awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or in 2016. The ensemble's recording of Nordic choral music, "Northern Lights," was also highly praised for its innovative programming and impeccable singing. The Danish National Vocal Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the Danish Music Critics' Prize, the Edison Award, and the Gramophone Award. The ensemble's commitment to promoting Nordic choral music and commissioning new works has also been recognized with the Nordic Council Music Prize, which it received in 2014. Despite its many achievements, the Danish National Vocal Ensemble remains dedicated to exploring new musical horizons and pushing the boundaries of choral music. The ensemble's current artistic director, Marcus Farnsworth, has expressed a desire to continue the ensemble's tradition of commissioning new works and collaborating with other artists and ensembles.
