The Stockholm Chamber Choir is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Stockholm, Sweden. Founded in 1995 by conductor and composer Simon Phipps, the choir has established itself as one of the leading vocal ensembles in Scandinavia, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The choir's founding was inspired by Phipps' desire to create a professional chamber choir that would perform a wide range of repertoire, from early music to contemporary works. He assembled a group of talented singers from the Stockholm area, and the ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its high standards of performance and artistic excellence. Over the years, the Stockholm Chamber Choir has attracted some of the finest vocalists in Sweden, many of whom have gone on to successful careers as soloists and ensemble singers. The choir's current members include sopranos Maria Forsström and Karin Dornbusch, altos Anna Zander and Maria Lindal, tenors Erik Westberg and Anders Eby, and basses Per Sjöberg and Anders Jansson. One of the highlights of the Stockholm Chamber Choir's career was its performance at the 2000 World Symposium on Choral Music in Rotterdam, where the ensemble received widespread acclaim for its interpretation of contemporary Swedish choral music. The choir has also performed at major festivals and concert halls throughout Europe, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Bergen International Festival, and the Berlin Philharmonic. In addition to its live performances, the Stockholm Chamber Choir has released several critically acclaimed recordings, including "Nordic Voices," a collection of works by Nordic composers, and "The Sacred Veil," a collaboration with composer Eric Whitacre that explores themes of love, loss, and spirituality. The choir has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the Swedish Grammy Award for Best Classical Album in 2003 and the Diapason d'Or de l'Année in 2010. In 2015, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Johannes Norrby Medal for its contributions to the Swedish choral tradition. Throughout its history, the Stockholm Chamber Choir has remained committed to its mission of promoting the highest standards of choral performance and fostering a love of classical music in audiences around the world. With its exceptional musicianship, innovative programming, and dedication to artistic excellence, the choir continues to inspire and delight audiences both at home in Sweden and abroad.
