The orchestra was founded in 1976 by Jean-Claude Casadesus, who served as its music director until 2016. The ensemble has since been led by Alexandre Bloch, who was appointed as its music director in 2016. L'Orchestre National de Lille is composed of around 100 musicians, including strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The ensemble performs a wide range of classical music repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary works. The orchestra has also collaborated with various soloists and conductors, including Martha Argerich, Lang Lang, and Valery Gergiev. One of the highlights of L'Orchestre National de Lille's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.
