Art Zoyd is a French avant-garde music group that was formed in 1969 in Valenciennes, France. The group was founded by Gérard Hourbette, Thierry Zaboitzeff, and Jean-Pierre Soarez. The name "Art Zoyd" is derived from the French phrase "art zéroïde," which means "art without form." The group's early music was heavily influenced by the works of contemporary classical composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez. They also drew inspiration from the experimental rock music of bands like Pink Floyd and King Crimson. Art Zoyd's early albums, such as "Symphonie pour le jour où brûleront les cités" (Symphony for the Day When the Cities Will Burn) and "Musique pour l'Odyssée" (Music for the Odyssey), were characterized by their use of unconventional instruments and techniques. The group often used electronic instruments, such as synthesizers and tape loops, to create their unique sound. In the 1980s, Art Zoyd began to incorporate more traditional classical instruments, such as strings and woodwinds, into their music. This shift in style can be heard on albums like "Les espaces inquiets" (The Restless Spaces) and "Berlin." One of Art Zoyd's most notable works is their soundtrack for the 1989 film "La Vieille Dame et les Pigeons" (The Old Lady and the Pigeons). The film, directed by Sylvain Chomet, tells the story of a starving policeman who befriends a wealthy old woman and her army of pigeons. Art Zoyd's haunting and atmospheric score perfectly captures the film's surreal and melancholic tone. Another highlight of Art Zoyd's career is their collaboration with choreographer Carolyn Carlson on the ballet "Blue Lady." The ballet, which premiered in 1991, features music composed by Thierry Zaboitzeff and Gérard Hourbette. The score combines electronic and acoustic instruments to create a dreamlike and otherworldly atmosphere. Art Zoyd's music has been described as "challenging" and "difficult" by some critics, but it has also been praised for its innovation and originality. The group's willingness to experiment with unconventional instruments and techniques has made them a favorite among fans of avant-garde and experimental music. Despite their relatively low profile outside of France, Art Zoyd has had a significant influence on the development of experimental music. Their use of electronic instruments and unconventional techniques has inspired countless musicians and composers over the years. Today, Art Zoyd continues to create innovative and challenging music. The group's most recent album, "Rêve d'Éléphant Orchestra," was released in 2014 and features a collaboration with the Belgian jazz group Aka Moon. The album is a testament to Art Zoyd's enduring creativity and commitment to pushing the boundaries of contemporary music.
