He was born on August 22, 1941, in Valencia, Spain. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, which influenced his love for music from a young age. Garcia began his musical studies at the age of six, learning to play the violin with his father. He later studied at the Valencia Conservatory, where he graduated with honors in violin and chamber music. He continued his studies in Paris with renowned violinist Henryk Szeryng and in London with violinist Yfrah Neaman. In 1965, Garcia won the prestigious International Violin Competition in Geneva, Switzerland, which launched his career as a soloist. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. In addition to his solo career, Garcia also became interested in conducting. He studied with conductor Sergiu Celibidache and became his assistant at the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. He also studied with conductor Herbert von Karajan and became his assistant at the Salzburg Festival. Garcia's conducting career took off in the 1980s when he became the principal conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra. He also served as the principal conductor of the Valencia Symphony Orchestra and the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Garcia has also been recognized for his contributions to classical music. In 1996, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Fine Arts by the Spanish government. He has also been awarded the Medal of Honor by the Valencia City Council and the Medal of Honor by the Bilbao City Council. One of Garcia's most notable performances was his conducting of the world premiere of Joaquin Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez" for guitar and orchestra. The performance took place in 1979 with guitarist Narciso Yepes and the Spanish National Orchestra. The piece has since become one of the most popular and recognizable works in classical music. Garcia has also been a champion of Spanish music, conducting many works by Spanish composers, including Manuel de Falla, Joaquin Rodrigo, and Isaac Albeniz. He has also recorded many albums of Spanish music, including "Spanish Violin Music" and "Spanish Guitar Music." In addition to his conducting and solo performances, Garcia has also been a teacher and mentor to many young musicians. He has taught at the Valencia Conservatory and the Madrid Royal Conservatory.
