He was born on August 22, 1904, in the city of Cologne, Germany. Pitz was the youngest of three children born to his parents, who were both musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Pitz showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Pitz's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied under renowned pianist and composer Max von Pauer. Pitz's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a prodigy. In 1922, Pitz made his debut as a solo pianist at the age of 18. He performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra, which received critical acclaim. This performance marked the beginning of Pitz's career as a concert pianist. Over the next few years, Pitz continued to perform in concerts across Europe, gaining a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. In 1926, he won the prestigious International Piano Competition in Vienna, Austria, which further cemented his status as a rising star in the world of classical music. He was known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. Pitz was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert. In 1939, Pitz moved to the United States, where he continued to perform in concerts and teach at various music schools. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1944. During this time, Pitz also began to focus on conducting, and he conducted several orchestras in the United States and Europe. One of Pitz's most significant achievements as a conductor was his work with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He served as the assistant conductor of the orchestra from 1949 to 1951 and later as the associate conductor from 1951 to 1958. Pitz was known for his ability to bring out the best in the orchestra and for his innovative programming, which included works by contemporary composers. In addition to his work as a conductor, Pitz continued to perform as a pianist throughout his career. He gave his last public performance in 1970 at the age of 66. Pitz retired from performing and conducting in 1972 and spent the rest of his life teaching and mentoring young musicians. Throughout his career, Pitz received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1956, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services to music. He was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1960.
