Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, also known as the Bavarian Radio Chorus, is a world-renowned classical music ensemble based in Munich, Germany. The choir was founded in 1946 by Eugen Jochum, a prominent conductor and musician, and has since become one of the most respected and acclaimed choral groups in the world. The choir's early years were marked by a focus on traditional choral repertoire, including works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart. However, under the leadership of Jochum, the choir quickly expanded its repertoire to include contemporary works by composers such as Stravinsky, Hindemith, and Schoenberg. This commitment to both traditional and modern music has remained a hallmark of the choir's identity to this day. Throughout its history, the Bavarian Radio Chorus has collaborated with some of the most celebrated conductors and orchestras in the world. In the 1950s and 60s, the choir worked closely with conductors such as Rafael Kubelik and Karl Richter, performing with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and other leading orchestras in Europe and beyond. In the 1970s and 80s, the choir continued to build its reputation through collaborations with conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Claudio Abbado. One of the choir's most notable achievements came in 1985, when it performed in the world premiere of Gyorgy Ligeti's opera "Le Grand Macabre" at the Salzburg Festival. The performance was widely praised for its technical precision and musicality, and helped to cement the choir's reputation as a leading interpreter of contemporary music. In addition to its work with orchestras and conductors, the Bavarian Radio Chorus has also established itself as a formidable solo ensemble. The choir has recorded numerous albums of choral music, ranging from traditional works by Bach and Mozart to contemporary pieces by Ligeti and other modern composers. These recordings have earned the choir numerous awards and accolades, including several Grammy nominations and a Diapason d'Or award for its recording of Brahms' "Ein deutsches Requiem." Throughout its history, the Bavarian Radio Chorus has remained committed to promoting the art of choral music through education and outreach. The choir regularly hosts workshops and masterclasses for young singers, and has established partnerships with schools and community organizations throughout Germany. This commitment to education and outreach has helped to ensure that the choir's legacy will continue for generations to come. Today, the Bavarian Radio Chorus remains one of the most respected and acclaimed choral ensembles in the world. Under the leadership of conductor Howard Arman, the choir continues to push the boundaries of choral music, performing both traditional and contemporary works with technical precision and musicality. With a rich history and a bright future, the Bavarian Radio Chorus is a true treasure of the classical music world.
