The ensemble was founded in 1971 by the Swedish conductor and harpsichordist, Arnold Östman, who served as the ensemble's artistic director until 1995. The ensemble is named after the Drottningholm Palace Theatre, a historic theatre in Stockholm, Sweden, where the ensemble has performed many of its most notable concerts. The Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble is known for its historically informed performances of Baroque music, using period instruments and techniques to recreate the sound and style of the music as it would have been heard in the 17th and 18th centuries. The ensemble has a core group of musicians who perform regularly together, but also collaborates with guest artists and conductors for specific projects. The ensemble's main members include some of the most respected Baroque musicians in Sweden and Europe, including violinists Nils-Erik Sparf and Peter Spissky, cellist Mime Yamahiro Brinkmann, and harpsichordist Lars Ulrik Mortensen. These musicians have been with the ensemble for many years and have helped to establish its reputation as one of the leading Baroque ensembles in the world. The Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Salzburg Festival in Austria. The ensemble has also made numerous recordings, many of which have received critical acclaim and awards. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was its production of Handel's opera, "Giulio Cesare," at the Drottningholm Palace Theatre in 1990. This production, which was directed by Ingmar Bergman, received widespread acclaim and was later released on DVD. The ensemble has also collaborated with other notable directors and choreographers, including Mats Ek and Mark Morris. In addition to its performances and recordings, the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble has received numerous awards and honors for its contributions to the world of classical music. In 1991, the ensemble was awarded the Swedish Grammy for Best Classical Album for its recording of Bach's "Brandenburg Concertos." The ensemble has also been awarded the Diapason d'Or, the Gramophone Award, and the Cannes Classical Award, among others. Today, the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble continues to be one of the leading Baroque ensembles in the world, known for its historically informed performances and collaborations with some of the most respected artists in the field. The ensemble's commitment to authenticity and excellence has helped to establish it as a major force in the world of classical music, and its legacy is sure to endure for many years to come.More....
