He was born on November 17, 1709, in the town of Herzberg, in the state of Brandenburg. His father, Johann Schaffrath, was a musician and organist, and it was under his guidance that Christoph began his musical education. As a child, Christoph showed a great aptitude for music, and he quickly became proficient on several instruments, including the harpsichord, organ, and violin. He also showed a talent for composition, and by the age of 16, he had already written several pieces of music. In 1726, Christoph moved to Berlin, where he became a student of the famous composer Johann Joachim Quantz. Under Quantz's tutelage, Christoph honed his skills as a composer and musician, and he soon became known for his virtuosic performances on the harpsichord and organ. In 1733, Christoph was appointed as the court harpsichordist for the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp, a position he held for several years. During this time, he composed a number of works for the court, including sonatas, concertos, and chamber music. In 1740, Christoph moved to Berlin, where he became the court harpsichordist for King Frederick II of Prussia. He remained in this position for the rest of his life, and he became one of the most respected musicians in the court. As a composer, Christoph was known for his elegant and refined style, which was characterized by its use of counterpoint and its intricate harmonies. He wrote music in a variety of genres, including sonatas, concertos, and chamber music, and his works were highly regarded by his contemporaries. One of Christoph's most famous works is his Sonata in D Major for Harpsichord and Violin, which is considered one of the finest examples of the Baroque sonata form. The piece is characterized by its lively rhythms, intricate harmonies, and virtuosic solo passages, and it remains a popular work among musicians and audiences alike. Another notable work by Christoph is his Concerto for Harpsichord and Strings in B-flat Major, which is considered one of the finest examples of the Baroque concerto form. The piece is characterized by its lively rhythms, intricate harmonies, and virtuosic solo passages, and it remains a popular work among musicians and audiences alike. Throughout his career, Christoph remained dedicated to his craft, and he continued to compose and perform music until his death on February 5, 1763.
