Tellefsen grew up in a family of musicians, and his father was a violinist. He started playing the violin at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Tellefsen's musical education began at the Trondheim Music Conservatory, where he studied under the guidance of Leif Jørgensen. He later continued his studies at the Oslo Music Conservatory, where he was taught by Bjarne Brustad. In 1960, Tellefsen made his debut as a soloist with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, performing the Violin Concerto by Jean Sibelius.
