Sergei Nakariakov is a Russian classical trumpet player who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and unique sound. Born on May 10, 1977, in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, Nakariakov began playing the trumpet at the age of four under the guidance of his father, Mikhail Nakariakov, who was also a trumpet player. Nakariakov's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly gained a reputation as a prodigy. He made his first public performance at the age of six and went on to win numerous competitions throughout his childhood. At the age of 13, he made his debut with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, performing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto. In 1991, Nakariakov and his family moved to Moscow, where he continued his studies at the Gnessin State Musical College. He also began to perform regularly with some of Russia's leading orchestras, including the Moscow Virtuosi and the Russian National Orchestra. Nakariakov's breakthrough performance came in 1993, when he was invited to perform at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in the United States. His performance was a sensation, and he was immediately hailed as one of the greatest trumpet players of his generation. Since then, Nakariakov has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors, including Valery Gergiev, Claudio Abbado, and Riccardo Muti. Nakariakov's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works from the Baroque era to contemporary music. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the trumpet concertos of Haydn, Hummel, and Arutunian, as well as his performances of works by Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Nakariakov is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Borodin Quartet and the Moscow Soloists. Nakariakov's recordings have received critical acclaim and have won numerous awards. His recording of the Haydn and Hummel trumpet concertos with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra was named "Record of the Year" by Gramophone magazine in 2002. He has also recorded several albums of chamber music, including a collaboration with pianist Maria João Pires. Nakariakov's unique sound is one of the hallmarks of his playing. He is known for his ability to produce a warm, lyrical tone on the trumpet, which is often compared to that of a human voice. He achieves this sound through his use of a custom-made trumpet, which he designed himself in collaboration with the French instrument maker Antoine Courtois. In addition to his performances and recordings, Nakariakov is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught masterclasses at some of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Nakariakov's achievements have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1998, he was awarded the title of "Honored Artist of Russia" by the Russian government. He has also been awarded the Order of Friendship, one of Russia's highest civilian honors. In 2016, Nakariakov was awarded the ECHO Klassik award for his recording of the Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1 with pianist Maria João Pires.
