Westminster Symphony Choir is a renowned classical music artist that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over 50 years. The choir was founded in 1969 by John Finley Williamson, a prominent conductor and music educator, who envisioned a choir that would bring together talented singers from all over the world to perform the great choral works of the past and present. The choir's early years were marked by a series of successful performances in the United States and Europe, including appearances at the Edinburgh Festival and the Salzburg Festival. In 1972, the choir made its debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City, performing Handel's Messiah to critical acclaim. This performance marked the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship between the choir and Carnegie Hall, which has since become one of the choir's most important performance venues. Over the years, the Westminster Symphony Choir has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors and orchestras, including Leonard Bernstein, Sir Georg Solti, and the New York Philharmonic. The choir has also performed with many of the leading soloists of our time, including Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and Renée Fleming. One of the choir's most memorable performances took place in 1984, when they performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. This performance was widely regarded as one of the greatest interpretations of the work ever recorded, and it earned the choir a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance. In addition to their many performances, the Westminster Symphony Choir has also recorded extensively, with over 50 recordings to their name. Their recordings have received numerous awards and accolades, including several Grammy Awards and a Grand Prix du Disque. Throughout their long and illustrious career, the Westminster Symphony Choir has remained committed to their mission of bringing the great choral works of the past and present to audiences around the world. Their dedication to excellence and their passion for music have made them one of the most respected and beloved choral ensembles in the world.
