Phillip McCann is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of brass music. Born on 30th September 1945 in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England, McCann showed an early interest in music and began playing the cornet at the age of six. He was inspired by his father, who was a brass band conductor, and his mother, who was a pianist. McCann's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly became a member of the local brass band. He continued to hone his skills and eventually joined the Black Dyke Mills Band, one of the most prestigious brass bands in the world. He played with the band for over 25 years and became one of its most celebrated soloists. During his time with the Black Dyke Mills Band, McCann won numerous awards and accolades. He was crowned the British Open Solo Champion in 1968, 1970, and 1972, and the National Solo Champion in 1969 and 1971. He also won the prestigious Brass in Concert Soloist Award in 1978 and 1980. McCann's success with the Black Dyke Mills Band led to numerous opportunities to perform as a soloist with orchestras and brass bands around the world. He has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has also performed in countries such as Japan, Australia, and the United States. In addition to his performances as a soloist, McCann has also made significant contributions to the world of brass music as a conductor and educator. He has conducted numerous brass bands, including the Brighouse and Rastrick Band and the Yorkshire Building Society Band. He has also served as the Director of Brass Band Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. McCann's contributions to the world of brass music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1994, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to music. He was also awarded the Iles Medal by the Worshipful Company of Musicians in 2000, and the Mortimer Medal by the Worshipful Company of Musicians in 2015. Despite his many accomplishments, McCann remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and teach, and his passion for music is evident in everything he does. He has inspired countless musicians around the world and has left an indelible mark on the world of brass music.
