The band was founded in 1888 in the town of Knottingley, West Yorkshire, England, by a group of local musicians who shared a passion for brass band music. The band was initially known as the Knottingley Silver Band, but it was later renamed the Sellers Engineering Band after the company that sponsored it. Over the years, the Sellers Engineering Band has had many talented musicians as members, but some of the most notable ones include William Halliwell, who was the band's conductor for over 50 years, and Derek Southcott, who was the band's principal cornet player for over 30 years. The band has also had many successful soloists, including David Daws, who won the British Open Solo Championship in 1978 and 1984. The Sellers Engineering Band has had many highlights throughout its long history. One of the most significant was in 1904 when the band won the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, which is considered the most prestigious brass band competition in the world. The band went on to win this competition again in 1906, 1913, 1926, 1927, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. In addition to its success at the National Brass Band Championships, the Sellers Engineering Band has also won many other competitions and awards over the years. These include the British Open Brass Band Championships, the European Brass Band Championships, and the All England Masters Brass Band Championships. The Sellers Engineering Band has also performed at many prestigious venues and events throughout its history. These include the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Symphony Hall in Birmingham, and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. The band has also performed at the Edinburgh International Festival and the BBC Proms. One of the most memorable performances by the Sellers Engineering Band was in 1972 when it performed at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Last Night of the Proms. The band played a rousing rendition of "Rule, Britannia!" which was met with thunderous applause from the audience.More....
