He attended the Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey, England, where he studied with William Pleeth, one of the most respected cello teachers of the time. Baillie went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he was awarded the prestigious Tagore Gold Medal for outstanding achievement. He has premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including Peter Maxwell Davies, James MacMillan, and John Tavener. Baillie has also recorded extensively, with over 30 albums to his name. One of Baillie's most notable performances was his 1991 recording of Benjamin Britten's Cello Suites, which was widely praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth. The recording earned Baillie the Gramophone Award for Best Instrumental Recording, as well as the Diapason d'Or and the Choc de la Musique. Baillie has also been recognized for his contributions to music education. He has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany.
