The orchestra was founded in 1690, making it one of the oldest orchestras in Germany. The ensemble has had many notable members throughout its history, including conductor and composer Carl Heinrich Graun, who served as the orchestra's Kapellmeister from 1727 to 1759. Other notable members include conductor and composer Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, who served as the orchestra's Kapellmeister from 1778 to 1795, and conductor and composer Louis Spohr, who served as the orchestra's Kapellmeister from 1822 to 1857. Over the years, the Staatsorchester Braunschweig has performed many notable works, including Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, Brahms' Symphony No. 1, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. The orchestra has also collaborated with many notable soloists, including pianist Martha Argerich and violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in 1989, which marked the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth. The performance was conducted by the renowned conductor Kurt Masur and featured soloists Jessye Norman, Brigitte Fassbaender, Siegfried Jerusalem, and Hans Sotin. The performance was widely praised and received a standing ovation from the audience. In addition to its performances, the Staatsorchester Braunschweig has also received many awards and accolades throughout its history. In 2015, the orchestra was awarded the German Orchestra Prize, which recognizes outstanding orchestras in Germany. The orchestra was also awarded the Lower Saxony State Prize in 2016, which recognizes outstanding achievements in the arts and culture in the state of Lower Saxony. Today, the Staatsorchester Braunschweig continues to be a leading classical music ensemble in Germany.
