He was born on June 17, 1909, in Copenhagen, Denmark, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Woldike showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Woldike received his formal music education at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied piano, composition, and conducting. He graduated in 1932 and began his career as a pianist, performing in concerts and recitals throughout Denmark. In 1936, Woldike made his debut as a conductor with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented conductor and was appointed the principal conductor of the orchestra in 1941. He held this position until 1955 and conducted numerous concerts and recordings with the orchestra during this time. Woldike's career as a conductor continued to flourish, and he was invited to conduct many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. He also conducted at major music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. One of Woldike's most significant achievements was his work with the Royal Danish Opera. He was appointed the principal conductor of the opera in 1955 and held this position until 1971. During his tenure, he conducted numerous productions, including the Danish premiere of Benjamin Britten's "Peter Grimes" in 1946. He also conducted the world premiere of Carl Nielsen's "Maskarade" in 1965. Woldike was known for his interpretations of the works of Carl Nielsen, a Danish composer. He conducted many of Nielsen's works, including the complete symphonies, and was instrumental in promoting Nielsen's music outside of Denmark. Woldike was also a prolific recording artist and recorded many of the major works of classical music. He recorded the complete symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky, among others. His recordings of Nielsen's music are considered some of the best interpretations of the composer's work. Woldike received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1955, he was awarded the Order of the Dannebrog, one of Denmark's highest honors. He was also awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize in 1965 for his contributions to the promotion of Nielsen's music. Woldike continued to conduct and perform until his death on August 22, 1999, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He left behind a legacy as one of Denmark's most prominent conductors and a champion of the music of Carl Nielsen.More....
