After completing his studies at the Vienna Conservatory, Steiner continued his education at the Salzburg Mozarteum, where he studied under the guidance of legendary pianist and conductor, Wilhelm Kempff. Steiner's career as a classical music artist began in earnest in the early 1970s, when he began performing in concerts and recitals throughout Europe. His performances were met with critical acclaim, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and promising young pianists of his generation. In 1975, Steiner made his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5.
