Born in Sydney, Australia, in 1963, McCallum showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. McCallum received her early education at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she studied under the guidance of Alexander Sverjensky. She later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York, where she received a Master of Music degree.
