Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1975, Bell grew up in a musical family and began his musical education at an early age. He attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he studied conducting and piano. Bell's career as a conductor began in 1997 when he was appointed as the Chorus Master of the Scottish Opera. He quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional musical talent and was soon appointed as the Musical Director of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus. In this role, Bell worked with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Simon Rattle, and Valery Gergiev. In 2002, Bell was appointed as the Chorus Master of the London Symphony Chorus, where he worked with conductors such as Sir Colin Davis, Sir Simon Rattle, and Bernard Haitink. During his time with the London Symphony Chorus, Bell also worked as the Assistant Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, conducting concerts and recordings with the orchestra. In 2007, Bell was appointed as the Director of the National Youth Choir of Scotland, a position he held until 2015. During his time with the choir, Bell worked with some of the most talented young singers in Scotland, leading them to perform at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall and the Edinburgh International Festival. Bell's talent as a conductor has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades. In 2005, he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Conductor's Award, and in 2011, he was awarded the Queen's Medal for Music. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Aberdeen and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. One of Bell's most notable achievements as a conductor was his work on the soundtrack for the 2012 film, Brave. Bell worked with composer Patrick Doyle to create the film's score, which featured traditional Scottish music and choral arrangements. The soundtrack was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score. In addition to his work as a conductor, Bell is also a respected choral director. He has worked with choirs around the world, including the BBC Singers, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Chorus, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus.
