Michael Head was a British composer and pianist who was born on January 28, 1900, in London, England. He was the youngest of three children born to a musical family. His father, Henry Head, was a well-known neurologist and his mother, Helen, was a talented pianist. Michael's siblings, Arthur and Ruth, were also musically inclined and went on to become successful musicians in their own right. Michael showed an early interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of five. He was a prodigious talent and quickly progressed, winning several awards and competitions. He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he was a student of Frederick Corder and Tobias Matthay. After completing his studies, Michael began his career as a composer and pianist. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented composer and his works were performed by some of the leading orchestras and ensembles of the day. He also became a sought-after accompanist, working with many of the leading singers of the time. One of Michael's early successes was his song cycle, "Over the Rim of the Moon," which was premiered in 1924. The cycle was based on poems by John Masefield and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. Michael went on to compose several more song cycles, including "The Estuary" and "The Ships of Arcady," which were also based on poems. In addition to his vocal works, Michael also composed several instrumental pieces, including a piano concerto, a violin concerto, and a suite for orchestra. His music was characterized by its lyrical melodies, lush harmonies, and romantic style. One of Michael's most famous works is his song, "The Little Road to Bethlehem," which was written in 1927. The song has become a Christmas classic and has been recorded by many artists, including Nat King Cole, Julie Andrews, and Bing Crosby. Michael continued to compose throughout his life, but his output slowed in the 1950s and 60s. He suffered from depression and struggled with alcoholism, which affected his ability to work. He died on August 24, 1976, at the age of 76. Despite his struggles, Michael's music has endured and continues to be performed and recorded today. His works are known for their beauty and emotional depth, and his legacy as a composer and pianist is secure.
