The ensemble is known for its innovative and experimental approach to music, and has become one of the most respected and influential ensembles in the contemporary classical music scene. The founding members of Ensemble Recherche were Klaus Steffes-Holländer (clarinet), Martin Fahlenbock (violin), Hermann Kretzschmar (cello), and Andreas Fischer (piano). The ensemble was formed with the goal of exploring new and experimental music, and to push the boundaries of what was considered traditional classical music. Over the years, the ensemble has expanded to include a number of other musicians, including Melise Mellinger (violin), Barbara Maurer (viola), Lucas Fels (cello), and Dirk Rothbrust (percussion). The ensemble has also collaborated with a number of composers, including Helmut Lachenmann, Brian Ferneyhough, and Salvatore Sciarrino. The performance was widely praised for its innovative staging and the ensemble's virtuosic playing. Ensemble Recherche has also been recognized with a number of awards and honors over the years. In 1992, the ensemble was awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. The ensemble has also been awarded the German Record Critics' Award and the Echo Klassik Award. In addition to their performances and recordings, Ensemble Recherche is also committed to education and outreach.
