Born in Riga, Latvia in 1948, Maisky began playing the cello at the age of eight and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Leningrad Conservatory with Mstislav Rostropovich, one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century, and later with Gregor Piatigorsky in Los Angeles. Maisky's career as a professional musician began in the 1970s, when he won several international competitions and began performing with major orchestras around the world. Throughout his career, Maisky has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated conductors of our time, including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and Daniel Barenboim. One of Maisky's most memorable performances was his 1985 debut at the Salzburg Festival, where he played the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Bernstein. Maisky has also made numerous recordings throughout his career, including acclaimed interpretations of the Bach Cello Suites, the Shostakovich Cello Concertos, and the Brahms Double Concerto for Violin and Cello. His recordings have won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. In addition to his work as a soloist, Maisky is also a dedicated chamber musician.
