He was a renowned bassoonist and a prominent figure in the classical music world. Sonstevold's passion for music began at a young age, and he started playing the bassoon when he was only 14 years old. Sonstevold's early musical education was at the Oslo Conservatory of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of the renowned bassoonist, Bjarne Magnus Jensen. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Harold Goltzer and William Polisi. Sonstevold's career as a professional musician began in 1964 when he joined the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra as their principal bassoonist. He remained with the orchestra for 12 years, during which time he established himself as one of the leading bassoonists in Norway. In 1976, Sonstevold joined the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra as their principal bassoonist, a position he held until his retirement in 2005. Throughout his career, Sonstevold was a sought-after soloist and chamber musician. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many renowned conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Sir Simon Rattle. One of the highlights of Sonstevold's career was his performance of Mozart's Bassoon Concerto with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in 1985. The performance was recorded and released on CD, and it received critical acclaim. Sonstevold's interpretation of the concerto was praised for its technical brilliance and musical sensitivity. In addition to his work as a performer, Sonstevold was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo and was a visiting professor at many universities and conservatories around the world. He was known for his dedication to his students and his ability to inspire them to achieve their full potential. Sonstevold's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with many awards and honors. In 1990, he was awarded the King's Medal of Merit for his services to Norwegian music. He was also made a Knight of the Order of St. Olav in 1995. In 2005, he was awarded the Norwegian Music Critics' Award for his outstanding contributions to Norwegian music. Knut Sonstevold passed away on December 15, 2011, at the age of 71.
