Angel Romero is a world-renowned classical guitarist, conductor, and composer. He was born on August 17, 1946, in Málaga, Spain, into a family of musicians. His father, Celedonio Romero, was a famous guitarist and composer, and his mother, Angelita, was a singer. Angel Romero began playing the guitar at the age of six, under the guidance of his father. Romero's family moved to the United States in 1957, where they settled in California. Romero continued his musical education under the tutelage of his father, who was also his mentor and inspiration. Romero's talent and dedication to the guitar were evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a prodigy. In 1960, at the age of 14, Romero made his debut as a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, playing Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. This performance marked the beginning of Romero's illustrious career as a classical guitarist. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Romero's repertoire includes works by some of the greatest composers of classical guitar music, such as Francisco Tárrega, Isaac Albéniz, and Heitor Villa-Lobos. He has also commissioned and premiered works by contemporary composers, such as Joaquín Rodrigo, Federico Moreno Torroba, and Lorenzo Palomo. In addition to his career as a soloist, Romero has also collaborated with other musicians and ensembles. He has performed with his brothers, Celin and Pepe Romero, as part of the Romero Guitar Quartet, and has also worked with orchestras and chamber groups. Romero's contributions to classical music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1986, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Ronald Reagan, and in 2000, he was inducted into the Guitar Foundation of America's Hall of Fame. He has also received honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Southern California and the University of San Francisco. Romero's recordings have also received critical acclaim. He has recorded over 50 albums, including solo works, chamber music, and orchestral collaborations. His recordings of Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez and Fantasía para un gentilhombre are considered definitive interpretations of these works. Romero's career has not been without challenges. In 1994, he suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. However, he continued to perform and record, and his recovery inspired him to compose new works. He also became an advocate for stroke awareness and prevention. In addition to his performing and recording career, Romero has also been active as a conductor. He has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has also served as the music director of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra's summer festival. Romero's contributions to classical music have been significant, and his legacy continues to inspire and influence musicians and audiences around the world. His dedication to the guitar and his commitment to excellence have made him one of the most respected and admired classical musicians of our time.
