He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Caals showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Caals received his formal music education at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and pedagogue Jan Wijn. During his time at the conservatory, Caals won several awards and accolades, including the prestigious Prix d'Excellence. After completing his studies, Caals embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist, performing extensively throughout Europe and Asia. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and versatile pianists of his generation, known for his technical prowess and musical sensitivity. One of the highlights of Caals' career came in 2001, when he was invited to perform at the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
