Genre:ChamberStephen Tees is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on 22nd September 1954 in Sydney, Australia. From a young age, Tees showed a keen interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. He later switched to the viola, which became his primary instrument. Tees received his early education at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he studied under the guidance of John Curro. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York, where he was a student of William Lincer. Tees also received guidance from other notable musicians such as Pinchas Zukerman, Isaac Stern, and Itzhak Perlman. Tees began his professional career as a violist in 1977 when he joined the Australian Chamber Orchestra. He quickly established himself as a talented musician and was soon appointed as the principal violist of the orchestra. During his time with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Tees performed in numerous concerts and recordings, which helped to establish his reputation as a world-class musician. In 1986, Tees left the Australian Chamber Orchestra to join the Australian String Quartet. He remained with the quartet for six years and performed in numerous concerts and recordings. During this time, Tees also served as the principal violist of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. In 1992, Tees moved to the United States to join the Cleveland Orchestra as the principal violist. He remained with the orchestra for 24 years and played a significant role in shaping its sound and reputation. During his time with the Cleveland Orchestra, Tees performed in numerous concerts and recordings, including the orchestra's critically acclaimed performances of Mahler's symphonies. Tees has also performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras around the world, including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also performed in numerous chamber music concerts and festivals, including the Marlboro Music Festival, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. Tees has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1983, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal for his services to music. In 1991, he was awarded the Australian Music Centre's award for the best performance of an Australian work by an individual or group. In 2004, he was awarded the Cleveland Arts Prize for his contributions to the arts in Cleveland. Tees is also a dedicated teacher and has taught at numerous institutions around the world, including the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the University of Melbourne, and the University of Auckland. He has also served as a mentor to numerous young musicians and has helped to shape the careers of many successful musicians. In addition to his performing and teaching career, Tees is also a passionate advocate for the arts. He has served on numerous boards and committees, including the Cleveland Orchestra's board of trustees and the Australian Music Centre's board of directors.
