The London Haydn Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of works by the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn. The quartet was founded in 2000 by four musicians who shared a passion for Haydn's music and a desire to explore the nuances and complexities of his compositions. The founding members of the London Haydn Quartet were Catherine Manson (violin), Michael Gurevich (violin), John Crockatt (viola), and Jonathan Manson (cello). All four musicians had extensive experience performing with other ensembles and orchestras, and they brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to their new venture. From the outset, the London Haydn Quartet was committed to performing Haydn's music with historical accuracy and authenticity. This meant using period instruments and playing techniques that were common during Haydn's lifetime, as well as researching the composer's life and times to gain a deeper understanding of his music. The quartet's dedication to historical accuracy has earned them widespread acclaim and numerous awards. In 2002, they won the prestigious Gramophone Award for Best Chamber Music Recording for their album of Haydn's Op. 33 quartets. They have also been nominated for several other Gramophone Awards, as well as the BBC Music Magazine Award and the International Classical Music Award. One of the London Haydn Quartet's most notable achievements was their complete recording of Haydn's string quartets for the Hyperion label. This ambitious project took over a decade to complete and involved recording all 68 of Haydn's quartets, as well as several other works for string quartet. The resulting recordings have been hailed as some of the finest interpretations of Haydn's music ever recorded. In addition to their recordings, the London Haydn Quartet has performed extensively throughout Europe and North America. They have appeared at major music festivals such as the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York. They have also performed at prestigious venues such as Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Lincoln Center in New York. One of the quartet's most memorable performances was their 2011 concert at the Haydn Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria. This festival is held annually in honor of Haydn, who spent much of his career as a court musician in Eisenstadt. The London Haydn Quartet's performance was particularly special because they played on instruments that had belonged to Haydn himself, which are housed in the Haydn-Haus museum in Eisenstadt. The London Haydn Quartet's commitment to historical accuracy and authenticity has not only earned them critical acclaim and numerous awards, but it has also helped to shed new light on Haydn's music. By performing his works as they were intended to be heard, the quartet has given audiences a deeper appreciation for the composer's genius and his place in the history of classical music.
