The Leipzig Gewandhaus Chorus is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over 150 years. The choir is based in Leipzig, Germany, and is closely associated with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, one of the oldest and most prestigious orchestras in the world. The Leipzig Gewandhaus Chorus was founded in 1840 by Felix Mendelssohn, who was the conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra at the time. Mendelssohn was a prolific composer and conductor, and he recognized the need for a high-quality choir to accompany the orchestra in its performances. He assembled a group of talented singers from the Leipzig area and began rehearsing with them regularly. The choir quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and it was soon in high demand for performances throughout Germany and beyond. Mendelssohn himself conducted the choir in many of its early performances, including the premiere of his oratorio "Elijah" in 1846. After Mendelssohn's death in 1847, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Chorus continued to thrive under the leadership of other prominent conductors, including Carl Reinecke and Arthur Nikisch. The choir's repertoire expanded to include works by other composers, such as Bach, Handel, and Mozart, and it became known for its precision, clarity, and expressive power. One of the highlights of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Chorus's early history was its performance of Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" in 1850. This monumental work had fallen into obscurity after Bach's death, but it was rediscovered and championed by Mendelssohn, who conducted the first modern performance of the piece in 1829. The Leipzig Gewandhaus Chorus's performance of the "St. Matthew Passion" in 1850 was a landmark event that helped to establish the work as a cornerstone of the choral repertoire. In the years that followed, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Chorus continued to build its reputation as one of the finest choirs in Europe. It performed regularly with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, as well as with other leading orchestras and conductors. The choir also made several recordings, including a landmark recording of Bach's "Mass in B Minor" in 1950. In the 20th century, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Chorus faced many challenges, including the devastation of World War II and the division of Germany during the Cold War. However, the choir persevered, and it continued to perform at the highest level under the leadership of conductors such as Kurt Masur and Herbert Blomstedt. One of the most memorable performances in the Leipzig Gewandhaus Chorus's recent history was its participation in the 200th anniversary celebration of Mendelssohn's birth in 2009. The choir performed a special program of Mendelssohn's choral works, including his "Lobgesang" symphony, which features a large choir and orchestra. The performance was a fitting tribute to Mendelssohn's legacy and a testament to the Leipzig Gewandhaus Chorus's enduring commitment to excellence. Over the years, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Chorus has received many honors and awards for its outstanding performances. In 2015, the choir was awarded the prestigious Echo Klassik award for its recording of Brahms's "Ein deutsches Requiem." The award recognized the choir's exceptional musicianship and its contribution to the classical music world. Today, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Chorus continues to be a leading force in the world of classical music.
