He is widely recognized for his exceptional musicianship and his contributions to the classical music world. Kord began his musical journey at a young age, studying cello at the State Music School in Kraków. He later continued his studies at the Academy of Music in Kraków, where he received his diploma in cello performance. Kord also studied conducting with Witold Rowicki and Henryk Czyż at the Academy of Music in Warsaw. Kord's career as a cellist began in the early 1950s, when he joined the Kraków Philharmonic Orchestra. He later became the principal cellist of the National Philharmonic Orchestra in Warsaw, where he played for over a decade. During this time, Kord also performed as a soloist with various orchestras in Poland and abroad. In the 1960s, Kord began to focus more on conducting. He served as the principal conductor of the National Philharmonic Orchestra in Warsaw from 1968 to 1972, and later held the same position with the Kraków Philharmonic Orchestra from 1972 to 1977. Kord also conducted the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sinfonia Varsovia, and the Polish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra. Kord's conducting career took off in the 1980s, when he began to conduct major orchestras around the world. He made his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1981, and later conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, among others. Kord also served as the principal guest conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London from 1985 to 1988. One of Kord's most notable achievements as a conductor was his work with the National Philharmonic Orchestra in Warsaw. He led the orchestra on several international tours, including a tour of the United States in 1987, which was highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. Kord also recorded extensively with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, including recordings of works by Chopin, Szymanowski, and Penderecki. Kord's contributions to the classical music world have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland's highest honors, in 1974. He also received the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland in 1995, and the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for Cultural Merit in 2005. In addition to his work as a conductor and cellist, Kord has also been active as a teacher and mentor. He has taught at the Academy of Music in Kraków and the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, and has served as a guest lecturer at universities around the world. Kord has also been a member of the jury for several international music competitions, including the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the International Cello Competition in Helsinki.
