Tomás Netopil is a renowned Czech conductor who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born on August 9, 1975, in Olomouc, Czechoslovakia, Netopil grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a conductor, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Netopil showed a keen interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of five. Netopil's musical education began at the Brno Conservatory, where he studied violin and conducting. He later continued his studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he studied under the tutelage of Jiří Bělohlávek, a renowned Czech conductor. Netopil also attended masterclasses with some of the world's leading conductors, including Sir Colin Davis, Seiji Ozawa, and Bernard Haitink. Netopil's career as a conductor began in 2002 when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Prague Philharmonia. He held this position until 2008 and during his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. In 2008, Netopil was appointed as the principal conductor of the Essener Philharmoniker in Germany, a position he held until 2013. During his time in Essen, Netopil led the orchestra in many successful performances and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of Dvořák's Symphony No. 9. Netopil's career continued to flourish, and he was soon in demand as a guest conductor with many of the world's leading orchestras. He has conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic, among others. Netopil has also conducted at many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Netopil has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2007, he was awarded the Antonín Dvořák Prize by the Czech Ministry of Culture for his contribution to Czech music. In 2010, he was awarded the Prize of the Czech Music Council for his outstanding contribution to Czech music. In 2012, he was awarded the prestigious ECHO Klassik Award for his recording of Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 with the Essener Philharmoniker. Netopil's repertoire is vast and varied, and he is known for his interpretations of the music of Czech composers, including Dvořák, Smetana, and Janáček. He is also known for his interpretations of the music of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. Netopil is a passionate advocate for contemporary music and has premiered many new works by contemporary composers. In addition to his work as a conductor, Netopil is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught conducting at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
