Born on January 18, 1930, in Flushing, New York, McDaniel grew up in a family that valued music. His father was a church organist, and his mother was a singer. McDaniel's love for music was evident from a young age, and he began singing in his church choir at the age of six. McDaniel's musical education began at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied voice and piano. He later continued his studies at the Manhattan School of Music, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree. McDaniel's talent was recognized early on, and he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Germany. In 1955, McDaniel moved to Germany to study at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich. He quickly established himself as a rising star in the world of classical music, and his career took off. McDaniel made his professional debut in 1957 at the Munich State Opera, where he performed the role of Papageno in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." Over the next few years, McDaniel performed in various opera houses across Europe, including the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. He also made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1960, where he performed the role of Harlekin in Richard Strauss's "Ariadne auf Naxos." McDaniel's performances were highly acclaimed, and he quickly became known for his powerful voice and dramatic stage presence. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Schubert, and Schumann. McDaniel's performances were characterized by their emotional intensity and his ability to convey the meaning and emotion of the music. In addition to his work in opera, McDaniel was also a prolific concert singer. He performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. McDaniel was also a regular performer at the Salzburg Festival, where he performed in numerous concerts and recitals. Throughout his career, McDaniel received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1961, he was awarded the Mozart Medal by the Mozart Society of America for his outstanding performances of Mozart's music. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1977 for his contributions to German culture. McDaniel's career continued to flourish throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He performed in numerous productions of Mozart's operas, including "Don Giovanni," "The Marriage of Figaro," and "Così fan tutte." He also performed in productions of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" and Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier." In addition to his work as a performer, McDaniel was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich and the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in the world of classical music. McDaniel retired from performing in 1995, but his legacy lives on. He was a pioneer in the world of classical music, and his contributions to the art form will be remembered for generations to come. McDaniel passed away on June 15, 2018, at the age of 88.
