La finta giardiniera is an opera composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1774, when he was just 18 years old. The libretto was written by Giuseppe Petrosellini, and the opera premiered in Munich on January 13, 1775. The plot of La finta giardiniera revolves around the love affairs of a group of aristocrats and their servants. The main character is Sandrina, a young woman who has been attacked and left for dead by her lover, Count Belfiore. She disguises herself as a gardener and takes a job in the service of the Podestà, the local magistrate. The Podestà is in love with Sandrina, but she is in love with Belfiore, who has also taken a job in the Podestà's household under a false name. The other characters include the Podestà's niece, Arminda, who is engaged to the Count, and her former lover, Ramiro, who is in love with Sandrina. The opera is divided into three acts, each with its own set of arias, duets, and ensembles. The music is characterized by Mozart's signature blend of lyricism and wit, with arias that range from the comic to the sublime. The opera also features several instrumental interludes, including a storm scene in Act II that is particularly dramatic. One of the most notable aspects of La finta giardiniera is its use of character doubling. Several of the characters have doppelgängers who appear in the opera's final scene, leading to a complex and somewhat ambiguous resolution. The opera also features a number of comic subplots, including the antics of the Podestà's servant, Nardo, and his lover, Serpetta. Despite its early composition date, La finta giardiniera is considered one of Mozart's most mature works. It showcases his mastery of the operatic form, with a complex plot, well-drawn characters, and a rich musical score. The opera has been performed regularly since its premiere, and remains a popular work in the operatic repertoire.
