Born on August 10, 1935, in Salzburg, Austria, Hager showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He went on to study at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg, where he received his diploma in piano and conducting. Hager began his career as a pianist, performing in various concerts and recitals throughout Austria. However, he soon realized that his true passion lay in conducting, and he began to focus on this aspect of music. In 1960, he made his debut as a conductor with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and his talent was immediately recognized. He was soon invited to conduct other orchestras, and his career as a conductor took off.
