Nora Shulman is a renowned classical flutist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. Born on August 6, 1945, in Toronto, Canada, Nora showed an early interest in music and began playing the flute at the age of nine. She was a student of Jeanne Baxtresser, Julius Baker, and Marcel Moyse, all of whom were prominent flutists of their time. Nora's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age. She won her first competition at the age of 12 and went on to win several more throughout her teenage years. In 1963, Nora was awarded the prestigious Eaton Scholarship, which allowed her to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. After completing her studies at Juilliard, Nora returned to Toronto and began her professional career as a flutist. She quickly established herself as one of the leading flutists in Canada and began performing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. In 1974, Nora was appointed as the principal flutist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, a position she held for over 20 years. During her time with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Nora performed in countless concerts and made several recordings. She also collaborated with many renowned conductors and soloists, including Sir Andrew Davis, Yo-Yo Ma, and Itzhak Perlman. In 1987, Nora was invited to perform at the White House for President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan. In addition to her work with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Nora has also been an active soloist and chamber musician. She has performed with many chamber ensembles, including the Canadian Brass and the Amadeus Ensemble. Nora has also recorded several solo albums, including "The Romantic Flute" and "The Virtuoso Flute." Nora's talent and dedication to music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1990, she was awarded the Order of Canada, one of the highest honors in the country. She has also been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Toronto Arts Award for Music. Nora has also been a dedicated teacher throughout her career. She has taught at the University of Toronto and the Glenn Gould School, and has given masterclasses around the world. Many of her students have gone on to successful careers as flutists. In addition to her musical career, Nora is also an avid gardener and has written a book on gardening called "Gardening in a Small Space." She is also a supporter of several charitable organizations, including the Canadian Cancer Society and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Nora Shulman's contributions to the world of music have been significant and far-reaching. Her talent and dedication to the flute have inspired countless musicians and audiences around the world.
