The Park Avenue Chamber Symphony is a classical music ensemble based in New York City. Founded in 1999 by conductor David Bernard, the ensemble has become known for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. David Bernard, a graduate of the Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music, founded the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony with the goal of creating a professional-level ensemble that would bring together some of the best musicians in New York City. The ensemble's name was inspired by the location of its first rehearsal space, which was on Park Avenue in Manhattan. From the beginning, the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony has been committed to performing a wide range of classical music, from the Baroque era to contemporary works. The ensemble has also been dedicated to commissioning new works by living composers, and has premiered several pieces over the years. One of the highlights of the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony's early years was its performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 2001. This was the ensemble's first major performance, and it received critical acclaim for its interpretation of the piece. The performance was also notable for featuring a chorus made up of members of the New York City Gay Men's Chorus and the New York City Women's Chorus, in a tribute to the victims of the September 11th attacks. Over the years, the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony has continued to perform a wide range of classical music, from well-known works by composers like Mozart and Brahms to lesser-known pieces by composers like Carl Nielsen and William Grant Still. The ensemble has also collaborated with a number of guest artists, including pianist Simone Dinnerstein and violinist Jennifer Koh. In addition to its regular concert series, the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony has also performed at a number of prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. The ensemble has also toured internationally, performing in countries like Italy and China. One of the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony's most notable achievements was its performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection," in 2013. This was a major undertaking for the ensemble, as the piece requires a large orchestra, chorus, and soloists. The performance was a great success, and received rave reviews from critics. In addition to its performances, the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony has also received a number of awards and accolades over the years. In 2010, the ensemble was awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, in recognition of its commitment to performing new and innovative works. The ensemble has also been praised for its educational outreach programs, which aim to introduce young people to classical music. Today, the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony continues to be one of the most respected classical music ensembles in New York City. Under the leadership of David Bernard, the ensemble remains committed to performing a wide range of classical music, and to bringing the joy of classical music to audiences around the world.More....
