Helmut Krebs was a German tenor and conductor who was born on November 17, 1913, in Mannheim, Germany. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Krebs began his musical education at a young age, studying piano, violin, and singing. He later attended the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, where he studied voice with the renowned tenor Julius Patzak. Krebs made his professional debut in 1937 at the Stadttheater in Königsberg, where he sang the role of Tamino in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." He quickly established himself as a leading tenor in Germany, performing in operas and concerts throughout the country. In 1942, he joined the Berlin State Opera, where he remained until the end of World War II. After the war, Krebs continued to perform in Germany and began to gain international recognition. He made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1947, singing the role of Ferrando in Mozart's "Così fan tutte." He also performed at the Bayreuth Festival, singing the role of Walther von Stolzing in Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg." Krebs was known for his clear, bright voice and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. He was particularly admired for his interpretations of Mozart and Bach, and he recorded many of their works. He also performed in operas by Handel, Gluck, and Beethoven, among others. In addition to his career as a singer, Krebs was also a conductor. He founded the Helmut Krebs Chamber Orchestra in 1950 and conducted many of its performances. He also conducted orchestras in Germany and abroad, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Krebs received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1953, he was awarded the title of Kammersänger by the West German government, in recognition of his contributions to music. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1973. Krebs continued to perform and conduct until his death on January 30, 2007, at the age of 93. He left behind a legacy of recordings and performances that continue to inspire and delight audiences today.
