He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Walter's family moved to Paris when he was six years old, and he continued his music education there. He studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist Alfred Cortot and composer Nadia Boulanger. Walter's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. In 1940, Walter's family moved to the United States to escape the war in Europe. They settled in New York City, where Walter continued his music education at the Juilliard School. He studied under the guidance of Rosina Lhévinne, a renowned pianist and teacher. Walter's career as a classical music artist began in the 1950s when he started performing in concerts across the United States. He quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso pianist, and his performances were highly acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. One of Walter's most significant performances was at the Carnegie Hall in 1956. He performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the Emperor Concerto, with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
